Definition
To finish first in a competition, game, or contest — to be the best. 'Japan won the match.' Critical mistake to avoid: in English you WIN a game but you BEAT a person or team. 'Japan beat Brazil' is correct; 'Japan won Brazil' is wrong. This distinction does not exist in Japanese (勝つ covers both), so it is one of the most common errors Japanese speakers make.
