Definition
War is a state of armed conflict between countries, groups, or factions, involving organized violence and usually lasting a significant period. 'World War II ended in 1945.' War is also used metaphorically for intense conflicts: 'a war on drugs', 'a price war', 'a war of words'. For Japanese learners: 戦争 (sensou) is the direct equivalent. Both words can be used metaphorically, though English uses this much more freely — 'war against cancer' is a very common English phrase and would sound strange if translated literally into Japanese in most contexts.
