Definition
In Japanese, バージョン is almost always about software: アプリのバージョンをアップデートする, バージョン2.0. The English word `version` is much broader. The core meaning is `one particular form of something that exists in multiple forms`. Software is one example, but English uses `version` for many other things. First, a `version` can be a different telling of a story or event: `the official version of events`, `her version of what happened`. Two witnesses might give two different versions of the same accident. Second, `version` is used for a cover song or remake: `Whitney Houston's version of `I Will Always Love You` is the famous one.` It's a different artistic take on the same material. Third, in religion and literature, `version` means an edition or translation: `the King James Version of the Bible`, `the abridged version of the novel`. Fourth, `your version of X` means `your personal interpretation`: `My version of relaxation is reading a book.` Fifth, in tech, `version` keeps the software meaning Japanese learners already know: `version 3.1`, `the latest version`. So when a Japanese speaker says バージョン they usually mean only software, but English speakers reach for `version` whenever there are alternative forms of something — books, songs, stories, recipes, even lifestyles. Learners who limit `version` to software miss most of its natural English usage.
