various (B1)
カタカナ: ヴェアリアス
IPA: /ˈveəriəs/
Definition
Various means of different types or from different sources — more than one, and of a range of kinds. 'Various reasons', 'various people', 'they sell various types of tea'. 'Various' is always used before a plural noun ('various countries', not 'various country'). A common Japanese-learner mistake: 'various' already implies multiple things, so 'various kinds of' can sometimes be simplified to just 'various'. 'Various kinds of fruit' and 'various fruits' mean essentially the same thing. The word is only an adjective — there is no adverb 'variously' in common use.
意味: 'various'はさまざまな種類や出所から来ている、複数の異なるものを指します。'Various reasons'(さまざまな理由)、'various people'(さまざまな人々)、'they sell various types of tea'(さまざまな種類のお茶を販売している)。'various'は常に複数名詞の前に使います('various countries'は正しく、'various country'は誤り)。'various'自体がすでに複数を意味するため、'various kinds of'を'various'に簡略化できることがあります。
