Definition
Money that people and businesses must pay to the government. There are many types of tax in English: income tax (所得税), consumption tax / sales tax (消費税 / 販売税), property tax (固定資産税), and others. In Japan, the term 消費税 is often translated as 'consumption tax', but Americans usually say 'sales tax'.
