English: Sympathy
IPA: /ˈsɪmpəθi/
Definition
Sympathy means understanding and feeling sorry for someone's suffering or difficulty — you feel for them, even if you haven't experienced the same thing yourself.
'I have sympathy for people who can't afford housing.' (I feel sad for them)
'She sent her sympathies when he lost his job.' (expressed sorrow/condolences)
Key distinction: Sympathy = 'I feel sorry FOR you.' (you see their pain from outside)
Empathy = 'I feel what you feel.' (you imagine yourself in their position)
Sympathy cards (condolence cards) are sent when someone dies.
I have sympathy for people who can't afford housing.(住む場所を買えない人たちに同情する)
She sent her sympathies when he lost his job.(彼が仕事を失ったときに彼女はお悔やみの気持ちを伝えた)
empathy = あなたの気持ちを自分のことのように感じる(内側から共感する)
