stubborn (B1)
IPA: /ˈstʌbərn/
Definition
Stubborn means refusing to change your mind, position, or behaviour even when there are good reasons to do so. It can be negative (refusing to listen to reason) or positive (persevering despite obstacles). 'He is too stubborn to admit he is wrong.' But also: 'She stubbornly refused to give up on her dream.' A 'stubborn stain' means a stain that will not come out easily. For Japanese learners: 頑固 (ganko) is the closest equivalent. Like 頑固, 'stubborn' can be either a criticism or grudging praise depending on context.
He is too stubborn to admit he is wrong.'(彼は頑固すぎて間違いを認められない)。 She stubbornly refused to give up on her dream.'(彼女は夢を諦めることを頑固に拒んだ)。'
