CEFR A2
stranger
Translation
見知らぬ人 / 他人 / よそ者
Meaning
A stranger is someone you do not know. The word emphasizes unfamiliarity rather than hostility. In everyday English, 'stranger' can mean anyone from a person you pass on the street to someone new in your community. Children in English-speaking countries are often taught 'don't talk to strangers', which uses the word in its most basic sense: someone unknown to you. Japanese learners should note that '他人' can carry a broader meaning (other people in general), while 'stranger' specifically means someone unfamiliar.
Examples
- 知らない人とは話さないようにしましょう。
