ストーブ

Stove

Translation

stove / cooking stove / range / cooker

Meaning

In English, a 'stove' is primarily a cooking appliance — the thing in your kitchen with burners on top where you cook food. In American English, 'stove' and 'range' both refer to this cooking appliance. Some stoves have an oven built in underneath the burners. In Japanese, ストーブ refers specifically to a portable space heater or room heater — the kind that sits in a corner and warms a room in winter. Japanese people say 'ストーブをつける' (turn on the stove) meaning they are turning on the room heater, not starting to cook. In English, the correct word for this is 'heater' or 'space heater'. Conversely, the Japanese word for the cooking appliance is コンロ (konro). A Japanese person asking 'Where is your stove?' may be looking for a heater, not the kitchen.

Examples

  • コンロの上に鍋を置いてスープを煮てください。
Put the pot on the stove and simmer the soup.
  • ガスコンロの火を消し忘れないようにしてください。
Make sure you don't forget to turn off the gas stove.
