Definition
A seminar is a small-group class at a university where students discuss topics, present ideas, and interact with the teacher and each other. Unlike a lecture, where one person talks to many, a seminar is interactive and participatory. Outside universities, 'seminar' also refers to a professional training session or conference workshop, such as 'a business seminar' or 'a leadership seminar'. Japanese learners may know 'ゼミ' (zemi), which comes directly from the German word 'Seminar' — the exact same origin as the English word.
