scholarship

Translation

奨学金 / スカラーシップ / 奨学制度

Meaning

A scholarship is money given to a student to help pay for their education, usually because of academic achievement, talent, or financial need. Unlike a loan, a scholarship does not need to be paid back. Common types include 'merit scholarships' (for high grades), 'athletic scholarships' (for sports), and 'need-based scholarships' (for students who cannot afford tuition). Japanese learners should note that the Japanese word 奨学金 (shougakukin) most commonly refers to a loan that must be repaid, while in English, 'scholarship' always means free money — no repayment required.
