ほとんど〜ない / かろうじて / ほぼ〜ない
Meaning
Scarcely means almost not or only just. It is more formal than barely and often appears in writing with any, ever, or at all. Scarcely any means almost none, not a small but comfortable amount.
Examples
- その部屋にはほとんど家具がありませんでした。
There was scarcely any furniture in the room. - 彼女はその知らせをほとんど信じられませんでした。
She could scarcely believe the news.
