CEFR A1

sandwich

Translation

サンドイッチ / サンド

Meaning

Two slices of bread with a filling between them — typically meat, cheese, vegetables, or a spread. Sandwiches are a very common lunch food in English-speaking countries. In the UK and US, sandwiches range from simple ('a cheese sandwich') to elaborate ('a club sandwich' with multiple layers). Informal variants include 'sub' or 'submarine sandwich' (a long roll), and British slang 'sarnie'. Japanese learners often know サンドイッチ well, but note the English pronunciation is SAN-wij — much shorter than the Japanese rendering.

Examples

  • 昼食にサンドイッチを食べた。
I had a sandwich for lunch.
  • ツナサンドとコーラをください。
A tuna sandwich and a cola, please.
