Definition
An official who watches a sports match or competition and makes sure that players follow the rules. The word is often shortened to 'ref' in informal speech: 'The ref was terrible!' In some sports, the official is called an 'umpire' instead of a 'referee'. Key rule: football, basketball, rugby, boxing = 'referee'; tennis, baseball, cricket = 'umpire'. 'Referee' is also a verb: 'She refereed the match.'
