Definition
To pursue means to follow or chase something with determination. It can be literal (pursuing a criminal) or figurative (pursuing a career, pursuing a dream). In formal and academic English, 'pursue' is the preferred word for following a goal, career, or interest: 'She decided to pursue a career in medicine.' / 'He is pursuing his interest in jazz.' Note: unlike 'achieve' or 'accomplish', 'pursue' does not imply you have reached the goal — it means you are actively working toward it.
