Definition

A plan of action or set of rules adopted by a government, organisation, or individual to guide decisions and actions. 'Policy' has two main contexts: (1) government policy — 'the government's housing policy', 'foreign policy', 'economic policy'; (2) organisational rules — 'our company's return policy', 'school policy', 'privacy policy'. The plural is 'policies'. Note: in insurance, 'a policy' means the contract itself: 'an insurance policy'.
