poem
Translation
詩 / 詩歌 / ポエム
Meaning
A poem is a piece of writing that expresses ideas or feelings through carefully chosen words, often with a particular rhythm or structure. English poems do not always rhyme — many modern poems are written in 'free verse' (自由詩). Key related words: 'poetry' (poems as a whole art form, uncountable), 'poem' (a single piece, countable), 'poet' (the writer). A common Japanese-learner confusion: 'poetry' cannot be used as a countable noun. You cannot say 'a poetry' — but you can say 'a poem', 'some poetry', or 'two poems'.
