Definition
A punishment or disadvantage given for breaking a rule. In sport, a 'penalty' can be: (1) in football/soccer — a direct free kick from the penalty spot (often simply called 'a penalty' or 'a pen'), (2) in other sports — extra time added, a player sent off, points deducted. Outside sport, 'penalty' means a legal punishment or fine: 'There is a penalty for late payment.' The plural is 'penalties'. In football, a 'penalty shootout' (or 'penalties') decides matches that are drawn after extra time.
