partner

Translation

パートナー / 相棒 / 伴侶 / 共同経営者

Meaning

A partner is someone who shares an activity, role, or relationship with you as an equal. The word is used in many contexts: a romantic partner (boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse), a business partner (co-owner or co-worker on a project), a dance partner, or a tennis partner. In modern English, 'partner' is the most neutral, inclusive word for a romantic relationship — it does not imply marriage or gender. Japanese learners should note that the Japanese loanword 'パートナー' covers most of these uses, but the English word is broader.

Examples

  • 彼女のビジネスパートナーは10年来の友人です。
Her business partner is a friend of ten years.
  • ダンスのパートナーを探しています。
