Definition
The group of people who are elected to make laws and govern a country, and the building where they meet. 'Parliament' is most strongly associated with the UK system, but many countries have parliaments. Japan's equivalent is 国会（こっかい）— literally 'national meeting', usually translated as 'the National Diet' in English. The US equivalent is 'Congress' — not 'parliament'. This distinction matters: do not call the US Congress a 'parliament' in formal writing.
