Definition

Something is necessary when you must have it or do it — you cannot go without it. A passport is necessary to travel internationally. Sleep is necessary to stay healthy. If something is NOT necessary, you can skip it.

意味: それがなければいけない・それをしなければいけない状態のこと。なしでは済まないもの。海外旅行にはパスポートが必要です。健康を保つには睡眠が必要です。何かが「必要でない」なら、それは省略できます。
