Definition
Modern means relating to the present time, or to a recent period of history. 'Modern technology', 'modern medicine', 'modern art'. In history, 'the modern era' usually refers to the period from around the 15th to 16th century (the Renaissance) through the present. In Japanese, there is an important distinction between 現代 (gendai — the contemporary present) and 近代 (kindai — roughly the Meiji era to WWII). English 'modern' can cover both, so context is key. In design and aesthetics, 'modern' often means clean, minimalist, and uncluttered — what Japanese design culture calls モダン.
