Definition
In English, a 'mansion' is a very large, expensive, and impressive private house. Think of the homes of celebrities or billionaires: sprawling grounds, many bedrooms, a private pool. Important false friend alert: the Japanese word マンション does NOT mean this. マンション in Japanese refers to a modern reinforced-concrete apartment or condominium building. If a Japanese person says 'I live in a mansion', English speakers will picture a grand estate with ballrooms and many staff, when they actually mean a regular apartment. To describe where you live, say 'I live in an apartment' or 'I live in a condo', not 'I live in a mansion'.
