Definition
The larger part or number of a group — more than half. 'The majority of students passed the exam' means more than 50% passed. In politics, a 'majority' can mean: (1) a simple majority (more than 50%), (2) an absolute majority (more than 50% of all possible votes, including abstentions), (3) a large majority or 'supermajority' (often two-thirds or more, required for constitutional changes). The opposite is 'minority'. Both can be used as nouns: 'the majority' vs 'the minority'. Note: 'the vast majority' is a common phrase meaning almost all.
