Definition
Feeling sad because you are alone or have no friends or company. 'Lonely' describes an emotional state — you can feel lonely even in a crowded room. Note: 'lonely' (emotional feeling) is different from 'alone' (physical state of being by yourself). You can be alone without feeling lonely, and you can feel lonely while surrounded by people.
