CEFR B2

literal

Translation

文字通りの / 直訳の / 比喩ではない

Meaning

Literal means exact, word-for-word, or true in the basic meaning of the words, not metaphorical. 'A literal translation' follows the words closely. 'I was literally shaking' means my body was actually shaking. Do not confuse literal with literary. Literary is about literature, books, and writing style.

Examples

  • これは直訳で、自然な英語ではありません。
This is a literal translation, not natural English.
  • 彼は比喩ではなく文字通り走って逃げた。
He literally ran away, not metaphorically.
