Definition
There are TWO completely different verbs spelled 'lie':
Lie 1 (position) — to be in a horizontal position or to be located somewhere
Present: lie / lies
Past: LAY (not lied!)
Past participle: LAIN
'She lay on the bed for an hour.' (past of lie = position)
Lie 2 (untruth) — to say something false
Past: LIED
'He lied to me.' (past of lie = untruth)
The confusion: the past of lie (position) is LAY, which is also the present tense of lay (to put something down). This creates enormous confusion even for native speakers.
