Definition
An organised group of sports teams or players who compete against each other over a season. Examples: the Premier League (English football), the NBA (basketball), J.League (Japanese football). In sport, 'league' competition means all teams play against each other over a full season and are ranked by points — different from a 'tournament' which has knockout rounds. 'League' also has non-sports meanings: an alliance or group of people/nations ('the League of Nations') and the idiom 'out of someone's league' (a person who is too attractive or too good for you to date or compete with).
