CEFR A2

lately

Translation

最近 / 近ごろ / このごろ

Meaning

'Lately' means in the recent past, usually over a period rather than at a single moment. It is closely related to 'recently' but 'lately' more strongly implies a continuing trend or an ongoing situation. 'I've been tired lately' suggests a pattern over several days or weeks. 'Lately' is most natural with the present perfect and present perfect continuous: 'I haven't been sleeping well lately.' Do NOT use 'lately' for a single completed event in the past — for that, use 'recently': 'I recently saw that film' (not 'I lately saw'). This distinction is subtle and important.

Examples
