island (A1)
カタカナ: アイランド
IPA: /ˈaɪlənd/
Definition
A piece of land surrounded by water on all sides. 'Japan is an island nation.' Japan is made up of 6,852 islands, of which four are the main islands (Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku). A critical pronunciation note: the 's' in 'island' is SILENT — pronounced 'EYE-land', not 'IZ-land'. This silent 's' was introduced in the 16th century due to mistaken association with the Latin word 'insula', and has stayed ever since.
意味: 四方を水に囲まれた陸地。'Japan is an island nation.'(日本は島国だ)。日本は6,852の島からなり、そのうち本州・北海道・九州・四国が主要4島です。重要な発音の注意:'island'の's'は無音で、'EYE-land'と発音します('IZ-land'ではありません)。この無音の's'は16世紀にラテン語'insula'との誤った関連付けによって追加され、現在も残っています。
