Meaning

Ironic describes a situation that is strangely opposite to what was expected, often in a pointed or meaningful way. It is not just any funny coincidence.

Examples

  • 節約の本を書いた人が破産したのは皮肉でした。
    It was ironic that the author of a book on saving money went bankrupt.
  • 安全運転のポスターの前で事故が起きたのは皮肉でした。
    The crash in front of the safe-driving poster was ironic.
