Meaning

Invocation is the formal act of calling on an authority, rule, right, or principle for support. It is common in law, politics, and serious argument. Do not confuse it with evocation, which is about bringing a memory, image, or feeling to mind.

Examples

  • 弁護士は憲法上の権利の援用に慎重でした。
    The lawyer was careful in her invocation of constitutional rights.
  • 非常事態権限の発動は議会で激しく議論されました。
    The invocation of emergency powers was fiercely debated in parliament.
