Definition
Independent means not relying on others for support, not controlled by others, or not connected to a larger organization. 'She is very independent and always makes her own decisions.' Countries gain independence; individuals develop independence; businesses are independent if not owned by a larger group. For Japanese learners: 自立した (jiritsu shita) and 独立した (dokuritsu shita) both map to 'independent', but 'independent' in English is used very broadly — for people, businesses, nations, films, media, and even restaurants ('an independent coffee shop').
