imagine (B1)
カタカナ: イマジン
IPA: /ɪˈmæd͡ʒ.ɪn/
Definition
To form a mental picture or idea of something that is not present or may not be real. 'Imagine' is a stative verb — in most uses, it does NOT take the continuous form. Say 'I imagine she is tired' (NOT 'I am imagining she is tired'). Key grammar patterns: 'imagine + -ing' ('Imagine living in Tokyo'), 'imagine + that-clause' ('I imagine that he will be late'), 'imagine + noun' ('Imagine the ocean'). 'Imagine' can also express polite softening or hedging: 'I imagine it will be fine' = 'I think it will probably be fine.'
意味: 今ここにないもの、または現実にはないかもしれないものの心的なイメージやアイデアを形成することです。'imagine'は状態動詞で、ほとんどの場合に進行形を取りません。'I imagine she is tired'(彼女は疲れていると思う)と言い、'I am imagining she is tired'とは言いません。重要な文法パターン:'imagine + -ing'('Imagine living in Tokyo.'=東京に住んでいることを想像してごらん)、'imagine + that節'('I imagine that he will be late.'=彼は遅れると思う)、'imagine + 名詞'('Imagine the ocean.'=海を想像して)。'imagine'は丁寧な柔らかい表現や推量にも使えます:'I imagine it will be fine.'=おそらく大丈夫だと思います。
