hypothesis (B1)
カタカナ: ハイポセシス
IPA: /haɪˈpɒθɪsɪs/
Definition
A proposed explanation for something, based on limited evidence, that can be tested through further investigation. 'Our hypothesis is that increased exercise reduces stress levels.' In science, a hypothesis comes before the experiment; a theory comes after it has been tested many times. The plural form is 'hypotheses' (hy-POTH-ih-seez) — this is a common spelling and pronunciation challenge.
意味: 限られた証拠をもとにした説明の案で、さらなる調査によってテスト可能なもの。'Our hypothesis is that increased exercise reduces stress.'(仮説:運動を増やすとストレスが減る)。科学では仮説は実験の前、理論は何度もテストされた後に来ます。複数形は'hypotheses'(ハイポセシーズ)です。
