harsh (B1)
IPA: /hɑːrʃ/
Definition
Harsh means unpleasantly severe, rough, or critical. It can describe words and tone ('harsh criticism', 'a harsh voice'), conditions and environments ('harsh winter', 'harsh lighting'), or treatments ('harsh punishment'). Unlike 'strict' (which can be positive — a strict teacher who is fair), 'harsh' almost always has a negative connotation — it implies unnecessary severity or unpleasantness. 'That's harsh!' in informal English means 'That was unkind/unfair.'
