English: Granted
IPA: /ˈɡrɑːntɪd/
Definition
As a discourse marker, granted means 'I accept/admit that point' — it concedes a fact before making a contrasting point.
'Granted, the price is high. But the quality is exceptional.'
(= I admit it's expensive, but the quality makes up for it)
'Granted, she made mistakes. She learned from them, though.'
Granted is also in the idiom 'take something for granted':
1. to assume something will always be available: 'Don't take clean water for granted.'
2. to not appreciate someone properly: 'He took his wife for granted.'
Granted, the price is high. But the quality is exceptional.(確かに値段は高い。
Granted, she made mistakes. She learned from them, though.(確かに彼女は間違いをした。
Don't take clean water for granted.(きれいな水を当たり前だと思わないで)
He took his wife for granted.(彼は妻を大切にしなかった)
Examples /
— Granted, there are risks. But it's worth trying.
