CEFR B1

graduate

Translation

卒業生 / 修了者 / 卒業する(動詞)

Meaning

The word 'graduate' works as both a noun and a verb, and the pronunciation changes slightly between them. As a noun: a graduate is a person who has completed a university degree — 'She is a Harvard graduate.' As a verb: to graduate means to successfully complete a program — 'He graduated from university last year.' Japanese learners often only know the noun form from words like 'graduate school' (大学院), but using it as a verb is equally important. Also note: in American English, 'graduate school' means 大学院 (postgraduate study after a bachelor's degree).

Examples

  • 彼女は去年大学を卒業した。

  • 彼はコンピューターサイエンスの卒業生だ。
