Definition
The fact of not succeeding at something; a person or thing that does not achieve what is expected. 'The experiment was a failure.' 'Failure' can be uncountable ('failure is not an option') or countable ('a business failure'). In English-speaking startup and innovation culture, 'failure' is increasingly valued as a learning tool — 'fail fast' and 'embrace failure' are common business mantras. This is quite different from traditional Japanese attitudes toward failure (失敗 = shame).
