Definition
To fail means to not succeed or to fall below the required standard. There are two main patterns for Japanese learners to know. First, 'fail to do something' means you were unable to do it: 'He failed to finish the project on time.' Second, 'fail at something' means you were unsuccessful in a general pursuit: 'She failed at her first business.' Note: 'fail an exam' (direct object) is also possible: 'I failed the test.' Do NOT say 'I failed in the test' — this is a common Japanese learner error.
