English: Except
IPA: /ɪkˈsɛpt/
Definition
Except means excluding — used to indicate that something is NOT included in what you are talking about.
'Everyone came except John.' (everyone came; John didn't)
'The shop is open every day except Sunday.' (closed on Sunday)
'I'll eat anything except seafood.' (not seafood)
CRITICAL: Except (with X) is different from accept (with A and CC).
Except = excluding (preposition)
Accept = receive willingly (verb)
They sound very similar but are completely different.
Except can also be a conjunction with 'that': 'I would go, except (that) I'm busy.'
Everyone came except John.(ジョン以外は全員来た)
The shop is open every day except Sunday.(日曜日以外は毎日営業)
I'll eat anything except seafood.(シーフード以外なら何でも食べる)
重要:except(Xを使う)はaccept(AとCCを使う)と全く異なります。
except = 除く(前置詞)
accept = 受け入れる(動詞)
I would go, except (that) I'm busy.(行きたいけれど、忙しい)
Examples /
— We are open every day except Sunday.
— Everyone agreed except him.
