Meaning
A formal process in which people vote to choose a person or group for a position of authority — typically in government. 'An election' refers to a specific event ('the 2024 US election'). 'Election' can also be used without an article to describe the general concept: 'Election is the cornerstone of democracy.' Key English phrases: 'hold an election', 'win an election', 'lose an election', 'call an election', 'stand for election' (BrE) or 'run for election' (AmE).
