Meaning

Eke is now used mainly in the phrase eke out, meaning to make a small amount last, manage to live with difficulty, or get something only with effort. Do not confuse eke with eek, a written cry of fear or surprise.

Examples

  • 彼らは少ない給料でなんとか生活していました。
    They eked out a living on low wages.
  • 彼女は最後の米を数日間どうにかもたせました。
    She eked out the last of the rice for several days.
