drought (B2)
カタカナ: ドラウト
IPA: /draʊt/
Definition
A long period of unusually low rainfall that causes a shortage of water, damaging crops, wildlife, and communities. Important pronunciation note: the 'gh' in 'drought' is completely silent — it is pronounced exactly as written here: DROWT (rhymes with 'out'). Many Japanese learners mispronounce it as 'DRO-goot' or 'DRO-hoot'. 'Drought' can be used as countable ('a drought', 'droughts') or in general statements without an article: 'Drought is becoming more common.'
意味: 降水量が著しく低い長期間が続き、水不足を引き起こして農作物・野生生物・コミュニティにダメージを与える状態です。重要な発音の注意:'drought'の'gh'は完全に無音で、DROWT('out'と韻を踏む)と発音します。多くの日本人学習者が'DRO-goot'や'DRO-hoot'と誤発音します。'drought'は可算名詞('a drought'、'droughts')としても、冠詞なしの一般的な文('Drought is becoming more common.')でも使えます。
