Definition
A system of government in which the people have the power to choose their leaders and participate in decisions, usually through regular elections. 'Democracy' can be uncountable (the general concept: 'Democracy is important') or countable (a specific country: 'France is a democracy'). 'Direct democracy' means citizens vote on every decision. 'Representative democracy' means citizens elect representatives who then make decisions. The adjective is 'democratic'; the opposite is 'authoritarian' or 'dictatorship'.
