Definition
In English, 'cunning' is an adjective describing someone who is clever in a sneaky or deceptive way — 'a cunning plan', 'a cunning fox', 'He is cunning enough to get what he wants without anyone noticing.' It can sometimes be used admiringly for exceptional cleverness. The Japanese word カンニング specifically and exclusively means cheating on an exam — copying answers, smuggling in notes, looking at another student's paper. 'カンニングをする' means 'to cheat on a test'. In English, the word for this is 'cheating' or 'academic dishonesty' — never 'cunning'. Saying 'I did cunning in the exam' makes no sense to an English speaker.
