Meaning

Comprehend means understand something, especially something complex, surprising, or emotionally hard to take in. It is more formal than understand. The learner trap is confusing it with apprehend, which can mean arrest in police English.

comprehend は「理解する、把握する」という意味で、特に複雑なこと、驚くようなこと、感情的に受け止めにくいことに使います。understand よりやや正式です。学習者が混同しやすい apprehend は、警察英語では「逮捕する」という意味になります。
