colleague

Translation

同僚 / 仕事仲間 / コリーグ

Meaning

A colleague is a person you work with, especially in a professional setting. It is more formal than 'coworker' and is often used in white-collar, academic, or professional environments. 'She introduced me to her colleagues from the Tokyo office.' The word carries a slight implication of equal professional status — you are on roughly the same level as your colleagues, not their boss or assistant. Japanese learners who know 同僚 (douryou) will find 'colleague' very close in meaning, but 'colleague' is often slightly warmer or more respectful in tone.

Examples

  • 彼は職場の同僚と仲が良い。
He gets along well with his colleagues.
  • 先日、元同僚からメールが来た。
I received an email from a former colleague the other day.
