Definition
A person who legally belongs to a particular country, city, or community and has rights and responsibilities because of this. 'Citizen' can refer to (1) a person with official legal nationality — 'a Japanese citizen', 'US citizen'; (2) an inhabitant of a city or community — 'citizens of Tokyo'; (3) in broader usage, any member of society — 'responsible citizens'. 'Citizenship' is the status of being a citizen. In everyday English, 'senior citizen' is a respectful term for an elderly person.
