Definition
A chemical element (symbol: C) found in all living things — in diamonds, coal, graphite, and the human body. In everyday English, however, 'carbon' is mostly used as a shorthand for 'carbon dioxide' (CO2) and related climate concepts: 'carbon emissions', 'carbon footprint', 'carbon neutral'. When a news article says 'reduce carbon', it almost always means reduce CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels. Chemists say 'carbon'; journalists and politicians usually mean CO2.
